CHAIN MAINTENANCE
« on: February 04, 2017, 08:53:26 PM »
I have been cleaning my chain monthly and using Wurth Dry Lube generously but the sides of my chain are becoming rusty.

I use WD40 Chain lube £10 a 400 ml tin. Used it on the R and the bike had done 18K when I traded it and chain was still good.
Amazon doing it now for £8 inc free delivery

Use paraffin and one of those 3 sided brushes to clean my chain and WD40 chain lube.
On 18000 miles now still on original chain, did it this morning actually as the weather was so nice and I've been riding in shite for the last fortnight so it was looking tired and slack.
Due for a service in a week or so I will ask them to check the chain as I think its probably nearly done now  no rust but probably adjusted as far as is sensible.

Yeh they 3 sided brushes are excellent. I got mine off ebay for £3 but I have seen them in bike shops for £10  :005:

I wear a pair of gloves spray the chain cleaning then wait a little. I take a used cotton cloth and clean the chain by hand by rolling the tire. Then repeat until clean also swapping the cloth. The easiest and cleanest way IMO. Let dry. After apply the new grease.
Saw many mechanics do likewise and chains are clean. I do this no issues.

I found the WD40 chain wax was good but I needed to remove the front sprocket cover to remove the huge build up of the grease. Perhaps I was using too much but :112:
I've just fitted a Scottoiler. Always used them and they are about the best thing for the chain. If set up properly, they are pretty clean in use as well. Also, the oil goes on when the chain is warm through use which is the best time to apply any lubrication.
Pretty hassle free in my opinion and I find the chain needs less adjustment over time.

No chain cleaning needed.

Cheers

Did you fit the Scottoiler yourself?

Yes. It took a while but was ok.
It needs to be the electronic one for this model.
Specific instructions are on the Scottoiler website although I didn't follow them exactly as I wanted it to be a bit neater but it took more work by removing the back wheel.

Those 3 sided chain cleaning brushes are fatal for the O rings

I am now using the SDOC chain cleaner and their white chain spray and both products are excellent

I lube the chain every ride and clean it every 2 weeks
You tell me how fast I was going Officer !
