I agree with you, gasoline of 87 oct is rubbish, but what I have here, the whole country uses so I will not have problems to sell here, but I agree with you, is a shame, but I'm glad bmw have given Some way of working with all the ponies with this gas garbage.
Do you want to be sadder with me? All gasoline sold here comes with the addition of 30% ethanol :(
But I assure you, already have GSX750, Xr1200X, S1000RR ..... DO NOT spoil the engine, I had a friend with s1000rr with 67 thousand km and still it is 100% out that my friend does not have too bad things.
Other than that, I've been walking around the world of sports bikes around here and I've never heard of a problem about it or blowing up ahead of time.
And as you can see on YouTube my bike is doing very well, and there is no problem of failure or something.

If 87 Octane gas is all you have to use (it is what it is).

So the bike can only go 160 mph on regular...hmm we need to go faster, right?
Anyway, regular just forces the electronics to retard the spark timing and you lose a certain amount of torque because of that. If you feel or hear knocking you need to immediately switch to high octane and consider getting your electronics checked (knock sensor) to prevent that(by further retarding the spark). I interpret knocking as the cycle exploding premature before the optimal up-and-over angle in the cycle so it is basically trying to run backwards for a fraction of the cycle and putting a lot of stress on all internal drive parts and bearings.
I use regular for most of my riding and have put thousands of miles on my bike with no consequences. Actually runs great to me with tons of power and torque such that I own the roads and highways.

When I die, I want to go peacefully in my sleep like my Grandfather....not screaming like the passengers in his car..!
