Crank Wont Start
« on: September 28, 2017, 01:29:17 AM »
Hi All,

I have a 2017 s1000xr about three months old.

On multiple occasions I have returned to my bike and it will crank but wont start. If I leave the bike for an hour it will start.

I have called BMW roadside assist and by the time they arrived it started. I then took the bike to BMW Motorrad and they performed a diagnostics and couldn't identify a problem.

I was watching some UTUBE and found a a video of another owner with the same problem and in the video he was riding with a mate and they both experienced the issue at the exact same time.

If you read the comments of the video it appears that multiple people from around the world are also.

Is anyone here experiencing the same problem as I am building a case for BMW.

Thanks

I had exactly the same problem.

1. Ride the bike for 30+ minutes.
2. Stop for 40-45 minutes.
3. Bike will not start.
4. 30 minutes later bike starts.

Anyway after trying many things BMW replaced the petrol pump. This fixed it. Apparently the heat soak does something to it.

Just an update...

After working with BMW Australia, BMW Southbank and BMW Germany, they replaced the fuel pump. It has been about 5 weeks and I havent experienced the error again.

I had to make a bit of a fuss although they were quite helpfull after that.

Here are my videos that I posted

I have just spoken to a friend of mine because he had the same problem with his 2015 model ( Now Sold due tri ill health ) he eventually had the pump replaced because under certain circumstances the fuel evaporated when the engine was hot and had been turned off. Causing a lack of fuel to the engine. He told me that it did cure the problem,,,,,,,

My 2016 just dropped off warranty 2 months ago.  13,000 miles and no issues.  Rode for an hour yesterday and today.  Bike sits for 30 min and then it cranks but wont start.  SO ANNOYING.  After an hour it will start.  I'll take it in this week.  Hope I have an understanding/knowledgable Dealer!

What a weird and rather unsettling fault?!? Fuel pump is one of those things that are generally so reliable you forget they exist like your fridges at home.
Old days they were rubbish in the early days of electric pumps but 21st century?
Not personally qualified to confuse cats, but I can recommend an extremely good service.
