Safety Recall - North America
« on: October 23, 2017, 02:44:14 PM »
For those not yet aware, BMW North America has issued a safety recall for 2013-2017 BMW:

  • R1200GS
    R1200GS Adventure
    R1200R
    R1200RS
    F800R
    F800GT
    S1000XR

Apparently, mounting panniers on your BMW will limit the visibility of a highly important reflective surface somewhere.  Bring your bike in and they'll festoon a proper safety device to keep you from immediate harm.  :021:

Think that one came out in Aug, don't sure but might have been mentioned before somewhere.  :028:

It's just a US thing as with panniers the bike doesn't comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard apparently.

Guess they just give you a few shiny stickers lol  :001:

Had a similar thing on one of my cars a year or two ago. Got some serious looking recall notice and when I went to the dealership all they wanted to do was put a tiny little safety sticker on a certain part of the car. It said something stupid like "don't close the boot with your fingers instead". I asked the guy if I "really" needed it as I didn't want my car covered in unnessessary stickers. He agreed not to apply it as long as I signed off that the "work" had been done. That was a waste of an hour or so. Safety gone mad  :138:

I received my recall notice a few days ago. I don't use OEM panniers, so it doesn't apply to me.  The letter says BMW will add some reflective device on each pannier to make them more visible. Even if I had OEMs, I would not put them on.  Of course here in the US., not putting the reflectors on, they probably won't pass the yearly safety inspection scam.

I ended up going with the Shad bags instead of BMW.  I don't think I'll be getting any reflectors any time soon.  :018:

USA here. No notice of this. Was just in for a new rear tire 2 weeks ago, no new stickers.

I call the store as did my brother in Chicago - they don't have parts to fix issue ; which must just be some
reflectors; so it must not be too serious if they are letting us stay on the road :)
