GPS Mounted Phone Holder
« on: February 07, 2018, 03:36:36 AM »
Has anyone seen or have this? I can't tell but would this connect to the stock gps preparation or does it need a different cradle? There's two listings for the same thing with different pics.

From the various pics - it looks like it mounts to the Garmin Zumo 660/Nav 5 cradle.

You can see that the cradle has the spring-loaded pins, and the new cradle has the fixed terminals.

So - you need at least, a Zumo 660 cradle on your bike.

A friend of mine tried to run his IPhone 6+ as a sat Nav on his bike in South of France, and found that the unit got very hot, and due to that and the screen having to be extra bright - the battery would not hold charge, even with a high-capacity USB feed.    Something to think about.

The "unit" mentioned above - was the iPhone, not the mount he had it in.

And to say "hot" - that thing was cooking!

Also figure that they have a different touch screen - so won't work with normal Bike gloves, you would need fingertip pads for an iPhone.

The mount as fitted to the XR, is the standard Garmin bike holder for Zumo 660 / Nav5 / Nav6.

I'll be interested in what you think. I'm going to be minus a GPS when my K1600 gets traded in for my new XR so I'm really wondering if I need a Nav V or VI to find my local Tesco. :112:

I was thinking one of these: http://www.nippynormans.com/s1000xr/x-grip-iv-universal-large-phonephablet-sat-nav-holder-with-1

Interesting about the power usage though...!  :005: As for the touch screen, if it saves me £500 I'll pull over and take my gloves off (- it's safer as well.  :431:)
What a long strange trip it's been...

Imagine the scenario.........

Stopped by police for whatever reason..........  :305:

Policeman has some 'attitude' for whatever reason.

Is having a critical 'once-over' of your bike, to see if there is anything to give you a ticket for ........

When.......... "PING". A text message pops up on your phone/sat nav. :005:

BINGO!   :232:

I think it might make him a bit Arsey, to say the least.

If you have had a Nav5 on your 16 - then you should already appreciate the interface with the bike.

You can probably pick up a mint Nav5 for under £350.

I must admit I was happy with my 660, but the ability to zoom in/out so quickly, and control a lot of the functions - made the jump worthwhile.
