Smaller license plate
« on: May 25, 2018, 11:20:36 PM »
:148: so I’ve never had a different plate from the one that came on the bike.
But for the XR I’m considering a tail tidy but need help in finding a smaller plate. So I’m based in London an where would i go about finding where to make smaller plates?
Are types of plates are road legal?
What sort of prices to look for?
Will police give me a lot of grief?

Legally, there's a standard size you should be displaying. Have a look at the links below:
 :211:   http://www.motuk.com/Motorbike-registration-plates.asp
           https://www.bikerandbike.co.uk/small-number-plates-motorbikes-whats-law/

From experience, when I lived in the UK, it would largely depend on the PO, whether he'll ping you or not, for displaying a smaller plate.
Leaving Brands Hatch a few years ago, after a bike event, the cops stopped and fined every bike with incorrect size and lettering on the plates (including yours truly  :192: )

Hope this helps...

Yes, the lettering and spacing are set in stone. The only scope I can see for reducing the overall dimensions is that there must be a minimum margin of 11mm. I would think most dealer plates have a larger margin.

As Serge says, whether you're stopped or not for running an illegal plate is a lottery. I run a standard plate with a tail tidy and I think it looks okay, but everyone's different, so.....

You can tidy the overall effect by removing dealer advertising and national identifiers etc. which are not mandatory, and perhaps add a black border which reduces the amount of yellow. Buying a six character plate (two lines of three) works well to reduce the width, but is an expensive option.

Google plate manufacturers and there's plenty of online sites that make standard or 'show' plates (illegal on road) .

Does anyone have a photo of a tail tidy + standard plate?
Too much police in London so I might stick with the regular plate. Thanks for the advice.
By the way? Anyone know much is the penalty / ticket for running an illegal plate?

Yep I always go for a 7 X 5 plate, as long as can be read it is ok, it’s the tiny little small slim ones you get the police go! normally fitted on a GSXR or R1 with a bell end riding it! All I see is a future stat!

Any idea what the penalty / ticket is for running a illegal plate?

I found this website:

And you can see on the photo how much they charge for a plate

Just be aware that it will fail an MOT if the plate is not standard size.... And if you live in the Metropolitan Area then they do frown on small plates. So its a chance you will have to take.  :305: :305:

Being a brand new bike i won’t have to worry with an MOT until mid 2020.

But yeah police presence is quite strong where I live, close to work and everywhere in between.
