Welcome....DO IT, DO IT, DO IT!!!  Buy the XR!

Seriously though, make sure you are an experienced rider.  It is a really fast bike and is very responsive.

I love to tour in mountainous conditions, ride hard in canyons and sometimes have to ride on the highway.  I would consider it a dual sport, canyoning and sport touring, definitely not off-road riding.

My 2016 has been my favorite bike of all time!  I now have about 7,000 miles on it.  I have had no mechanical problems with it.  Love my local BMW dealer.

Good luck with it!

I'd like to add - just saying, I feel the XR is a motorcycle/ tool for serious RIDERS who'll appreciate its ability to ride in comfort virtually all day long/ tour, but also handles equally well (if not better on the real roads of life) than a sport bike, also its got the HP/ gearing to stay with virtually any 200HP +/- sportbike up to about 115 +/- MPH, (which in reality is where 95% of the action is) above that speed the aerodynamics and riding postion of sportbikes will pull away from the XR.

Anyway, the XR may not be the best "looker" (I didn't buy it for that), but its been the best motorcycle I've had, and I can't imagine how BMW can improve on it much?!)

Oh blimey the X/R can be improved just with a decent pair of wheels and getting rid of the TUV restrictions but it costs money !!!

Quite where the OP is going to use an X/R with the new speed restrictions due to be imposed in France is probably a separate thread.

Many great roads on your doorstep, it would be a crime not to get the XR. It still rates as my all time Favourite usable bike. Stunning for touring with all day comfort. If you want a real blast then it will not let you down as the handling is sublime. I would not commit to saying it is perfect. But it really is as close to perfect as you will get...... :305: :305: :305:
