It's wired to the original socket wires, so it's "switched" via the ignition.

Glad to see some of you got something out of this thread, I still can't see why BMW didn't just fit USB sockets as standard either. The only thing I'd like to do to 'finish' the job off now is to find an original multiplug so that I didn't have to cut or modify the original BMW loom, the alternative is to buy a generic male/female multiplug and fit to the bike loom :028:

Just got one of those in the mail. Haven't installed yet. was thinking of leaving the BMW plug and adding an additional one just above it. Or maybe doing it like yours and cannibalizing the BMW plug. What else is that plug good for?

:062: Gairo, thanks for the post, from across the pond. I just ordered one from amazon. The usb will be much more useful in the front of the bike. I think I'll move the factory one somewhere at the back.

Couple of points:

You need to look carefully on ebay to find a dual socket and the voltmeter. Most dont have the voltmeter.

I use the main socket for keeping the bike on trickle charge when not in use.
I was going to wire this dual usb on the right hand side and just wire it in parallel - but unless you are careful with the wiring it will go in an area around the steering column.

Another easy option is to use the accessory kit and wire a secondary power plug into the loom. This is a much neater solution and probably safer.

So you still get the BMW style charging capability.

I am planning to mount an extra usb socket above the original one,(i use the original for my optimate canbus charger) i think there is room, but is it easy to attach 2 extra wires to the original socket?

Ah that would have been easier than my trim and fit the Chinese one I bought. Although it does have a volt meter for more geek factor.
