    I used to have a Hein Gerricke suit which had quite thin flexible rubber  armour in the vulnerable areas. My present jeans have armour in the knees but it is very bulky so I am looking for the Gerricke type pieces

    Look for the D3O pads used by Klim and Scorion as well as a few others. It's pretty comfortable, but doesn't like to go below freezing temps.
