shortened stock handlebar on 2016 S1000XR 1.25 inches on each side
« on: September 20, 2018, 01:10:39 AM »
This modification was recommended to me by one of the parts guys at Morton's BMW in Fredricksburg, VA. One of the mechanics there has a machine shop at home and he took my new handlebar (replacing a bent one...) and cut 1.25 inches off of each side, and re-tapped the ends as well as drilling new holes for the right and left grip screws. It's not something that I would have done if I hadn't had the new handlebar in the box but the idea sounded great. Since I first got the bike I did feel that the bars were a bit too wide. I'm mounting it on the bike tomorrow and will update with a description of the ride difference.

Interested, I've always wanted to do this myself.

Shorter, narrower bars = reduced visibility from the mirrors due to obstruction from arms / shoulders. Not an attractive option for me.  :305:

good point! I hadn't thought of that. Simple filx is mirror extensions. Thanks!

Will be interesting to get your thoughts after the change. I have a set of Renthal's that I am going to be putting on, that are also narrower. I may end up putting bar-end mirrors on.

Extensions are a simple option, or you could do bar end mirrors and get cleaner airflow at the same time.

Ok I installed the bar and it's definitely an improvement. Also picked up some extenders on ebay for about $25 (way less than the wunderlich option...) so the mirrors have a good view. Overall I'm very pleased. It feels more natural with the slightly shorter bars.

Looks good! Any clearance issues with  the levers or reservoir, or any binding issues with the cables/hoses? Would you mind posting a couple photos from the rider perspective with the bars at full lock each way?

good idea. here are some photos from driver side with bars locked all the way to the left and then right. I did have to adjust the angle of the bars so that the brake fluid reservoir would not hit the center console. It fits while still being comfortable. On the left side it didn't even get close.
