what oils are recommended

I like to do most of my own maintenance, my manual says SAE 5W-40. Anyone else changing there own and have a recommendation? I'm in northern california.

Congratulations the first "what oil " thread 

If the manual says SAE 5 w 40 I would go with that
as for the manufacturer of that oil its pretty much up to you they are all much of a muchness

I should have said I'm looking for a specific brand recommendation that I can get where I live. I've looked online and I don't see a brand locally that is SAE 5W-40. I'd like to use Redline as I can get a good price on it, but I wanted to make sure that I keep the warranty in effect. I know how most oil threads go and I'm not interested in going there, just a specific recommendation if anyone has one. Thanks.

I have always liked silkolene but Castrol is good but then so are all the main stream oils so i would go with whatever you fancy but remember if asked by a dealer when in for warranty tell them its whatever BMW are using at the moment they won't know any better

Thanks Redrick, funny I just talked to the dealer and he said if it conforms to the bmw spec your good to go. I realize It's different here across the pond, as for warranty laws.
