Temperature read out
« on: November 09, 2018, 05:44:05 AM »
Hi all,
I have a 2018 XR my problem is the temperature guage read out on
the screen , just noticed that the temperature read out was at 20 when bike hadn't been started for a week.
It quickly started to read out a higher temp after a short start.

I've noticed a small drip of oil under the water pump, bike is being looked at tomorrow by dealer.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Temp gauge is normal and will read ambient temp before engine is started...so if it's 20c outside it will read 20c....if is 0c outside it will read 0c.
Water pump leakage is very common, most get replaced under warranty....some leak oil, some leak coolant....and some leak both.

Which dealer..?? The R & RR share engines with the XR and also suffer the same problems, and have done for several years.... if they said they haven't seen a leaking water pump before...IMHO, they are lying.

Camshaft issues and rattling cam chains due to poor tensioners are also quite common across the range.

Up date on the water pump issue.

New pump fitted which is good , now when the bike gets to 100 deg the fan kicks in as prior to pump being replaced but temp didn't come down went to 106 then dropped to 104 and stayed there.
Before the pump being replaced bike would get to say 103 -104 fan would cut in temp would drop to 100-98

The day was somewhat hot but not extreme in temperature.
26-28 deg.

Thanks.

I've not had the leak or the water pump replaced (yet) - mine behaves as you saw before the pump was replaced.

Yes they certainly run hot, my concern was that prior to the replacement the bike had never gone past 104 and had always dropped back to 98/100 once the fan kicked in, the other day it went to 106 and stayed at that temp.

Haven't had a chance to take it out since that day, ride on for tomorrow will see how it behaves and report back.

Thanks for the replies.
