Different models of Optimate
« on: January 04, 2019, 04:32:39 AM »
Hey,

Looking to buy myself an Optimate as a late Xmas present, but seem to be able to get lots of different versions (2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 I believe).  Bike is a standard 2018 XR.  Is there any real advantage to the more expensive models?  I'm just going to connect the pigtail direct to the battery to keep it charged over the winter.

Many Thanks
Graham

For use on your bike there is little difference but if you ever want to use it on a car or van etc you will need at least a 4,I still have several 2’s and 3’s neither are able to bring a decent sized battery to a full charge where as the 4 will.

Im Pretty sure that the more expensive versions are able to recover dead batteries etc, but if all you want to do is keep yours up to scratch then a basic one should do fine I would have thought.

I bought this one from Nippy Normans and it's been faultless and easy to use. Comes with a connector that plugs straight into your Din Aux socket - simples and only £69.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

I use the CTEK MXS-5  not the cheapest, but will also do batteries upto 110ah ( 160ah for maintenance) so can be used on the car or van better use of your investment.  £79.99 at halfords. ( Be aware they advertise the same model on Fleabay for £26.00 but it is not the MXS-5 model although they state it is )......

Another +1 for Nippy Normans:

Just got one for Christmas and works fine on my 2017 XR.   :152:

Thanks for the replies.

There's two different models from Nippys people have mentioned:

https://www.nippynormans.com/optimate-and-sockets/optimate-43-bmw-can-bus-goldline-dual-charger

https://www.nippynormans.com/k1200s/wunderlich-optimate-43-bmw-can-bus-goldline-dual-charger-with-uk-plug

The first one is £10 more than the second, but looks the same apart from the picture saying its got some software tweaks and "2 free leads".  It seems to come with the same leads as the other one though?

Before I just buy the cheaper one does anyone know of a reason to justify the extra tenner?  I'm tight...   :038:
