Clutch play changes when engine warms up!
« on: January 29, 2019, 05:04:34 PM »
Anyone else have this?
Never noticed it on my S1kr.
A short while after getting my XR with 4k on the clock I noticed there was no play at the lever. I think bmw recommends 3mm or something. So I tweaked the adjuster, fired her up and went riding. When I next used the clutch on a up to temp engine I noticed the gap had increased.
Now it appears to get a 3mm gap at lever when hot, it closes up when cold. Otherwise all works fine. I have Puig levers which came with the bike but don't see that making a difference.
Anyone else notice same gap chsnges?

Yes I noticed this too on my 18 model. I also noticed that if adjusted when the engine is hot and the cable has expanded it buggers up gear changes with the quick shifter later. The clutch lever can be a little clunky but as I only use it for setting off and coming to a complete stop I can live with it as the QS is so much fun and easy to use.

I get it on both my XR and R. If I adjusted it when hot then there would be no slack when cold(would probably be -ve slack!!!)  :087:

So I'm not alone  :062:
Must admit, aside from my S1kr which had HP levers on from new, I've had hydraulic clutches.
Oh well, this "feature"  is at least a conversation starter.
Carry on....

You would have thought that a bike this new and of this price bracket it would have a hydraulic clutch. Even my KTM MX bike has one. Hopefully the new model will have one.

Well, it is an old and simple method of clutch actuation, but it's pretty reliable and no service costs with lined outers now.
Tis a bit heavy for those of us with a smaller hand, but I only notice it if I'm doing a lot of town or slow riding work.

Any one favouring a hydraulic clutch has never been on the side of the road with one that has gone belly up i’ll Take a cable every time at least you have a chance assuming your carrying a spare,i’ve Two bikes with hydraulic clutches do not even use the same fluid.

Another test if you to get your head around a wet clutch, next time your giving the engine some stick keep your fingers on the clutch lever and feel it come out as the clutch plates are biting.

Just be sure to adjust the cable free-play when cold, 1-3mm at the lever should see you sorted.
