2020 XR - Fuel filler cap
« on: June 24, 2020, 07:51:10 PM »
Hi,

Those of you in possession of the new 2020 XR, can you tell me if it has the same feature inside the fuel filler cap i.e. an extended "anti-surge" tube down into the bowels of the fuel tank?

On my current and previous Mk1 XRs they had this feature and it made refueling a time consuming chore. Luckily the tube was in two sections and the lower section was relatively easy to disconnect and remove, once you had removed the six screws around the filler cap and pulled it partway out!

Thanks,
Andy

Filling an XR  with petrol is a real pain! Can you really take out that nuisance 'anti surge' tube without any dire consequences?
If so, I'll get the screwdriver out this weekend ! Thanks for that. :037:
(PS. Can't help you with the 2020 XR yet I'm afraid).

Took mine out within the first week of ownership....I believe the GS boys did the same thing many years ago. Also helps to drill a small hole ~3mm near the top of the remaining filler tube so you can let the captured air out and fill right to the top without dramas.

Screwdriver won't help I don't think....You'll need Torx wrenches to remove the cap methinks. :001:

curious is there is a difference in north american versus european nozzles, as mine has this tube, but it doesn't seem to have any adverse effect when i'm filling the bike up.

You wouldn't miss it.
If you are not careful when filling up on this side of the pond, you'll get a face full of petrol.  :138:
Mind you, I do like to fill to the brim. Get the 200 miles in.

I just put gas in mine for the first time the other day and didn't notice any such trouble.  In fact, I commented later about it being the easiest fill up on a motorcycle I have had.  Also, this is my first bike with a keyless gas cover and I like that more than I thought I would.  I will say, the cover requires a little force to click back down but otherwise no issues as mentioned.
