1,500?? How much are registration dues over there? Geez custom plates in California run about $40 for then $40 once a year.

firstly we had number plates going way back.
Numbers are not selected by the owner, they are sequenced. The first was A1 then A2.....

So anything that makes up a name or word becomes valuable due to its rarity.

the fewer the digits the more valuable.

for example doc1 - doctor 1
swear words are not available.

We switched to a system where the year was embedded in the number. so for example 80 could be 'misread' as the letters 'BO'
Numbers and letters must be produced by a licensed entity using standard spacing and font -  Such that speed cameras can read them.
We are also taught from a young age to remember the number plate if there is a get away car or accident etc.

There are lots of examples of valuable plates such as SA1 1Y closely spaced  = SALLY or EL 1 = ELI
Twice a year we change plate numbers and the licensing authority then pre-plan the 'hot' numbers to an auction:
See here: https://dvlaregistrations.dvla.gov.uk/auction/

Sometimes numbers are considered worthless, so go for a minimum fee.
So the DVLA S1000Xr may have been such a number.

This is certainly the place to maximise his return.

number plates are a very odd English quirky thing.

I am sure others can add lots more to this thread.

Here in Aus and in each of our "states" you can get pretty much whatever you like, any number/letter/colour combination you can think of, within reason and unless it's already taken by someone else, also no swear words etc...Our number plates are a decent size too, unlike the UK ones where they're the size of a house.

I chose gold on black with my initials and year of birth..!  :028:

When I die, I want to go peacefully in my sleep like my Grandfather....not screaming like the passengers in his car..!

Private number plates are a stand alone business in the UK,you either tow the party line and use what ever is dish out too you when buying new,or put your hand in your pocket and have a reg that says ‘Look at me’

They can also be used for a bit of fun :-) I ran a K1300S for a while with the plate K 13 WTF plus it is a good way to hide the age of your bike if you don't want everyone knowing you have just lashed out on a new one...  But definitely agree they are personal taste!  Peter
