Location of canbus charging port?
« on: September 26, 2020, 10:29:49 PM »
I've just bought an Optimate 4 BMW canbus edition charger. There's what looks a bit like a 12v socket on the level part of the front left nose fairing just behind and to the left of the dash / windshield - this is where I should plug in the charger, right? The supplied connector fits in properly, but I can't seem to find any info in the rider's manual to confirm that this is the right socket to use....

Yep, that's where it goes...
Double check that your Optimate is set to canbus charging mode...

The BMW Canbus charger requires the following procedure:

1. Connect charger to cockpit socket.
2. Switch on charger at mains.
3. Switch on ignition (don’t start engine)
4. Switch off ignition.

That allows the canbus to open the port to the cockpit socket.

You will find that the process with the Optimate will be similar.

The Optimate 4 will keep that port open - after the bike ignition is switched off.

I plug my BMW charger into the Aux socket and then switch the charger on and that works fine. No need to switch ignition on  :305:

Is that within the 10mins grace-time after switching off the ignition?

Aah- I think the second generation BMW charger opens the port itself?

I find the theory of canbus bewildering.

That worked for me as well. The charger went through it's cycles and is now on float charge mode after doing a pulse charge for a number of hours. I hadn't actually turned the ignition on for more than a week and it seemed to talk to the canbus with no problem - no warnings / errors were shown, just the normal progression of steps as documented in the operating instructions for the charger.
