New M Chain - maintenance free - 2020 XR
« on: October 09, 2020, 11:38:10 AM »
I heard about this new option on 2021 bikes shortly after picking up my S1000XR 2020 so I ordered one which has now come in to BMW dealer.
Price is £230 incl VAT but now they advise me I need to change all the sprockets at same time (I have done 1000 miles from new) as otherwise compromising life of new "maintenance free " chain - so now the price is £480!
Thoughts and advice please?

£480  :005:

Not sure from your post if you have the bike already, but if you have you may as well wait until you need the new chain - they seem to last 15k miles as standard.

Really interested in hearing how this goes.

For my 18 plate ive emailed guildford vines and I was quoted £300 fitted for M chain available in november. Ive asked for chain kit so assume it was inc sprockets.
couldnt or didnt want to wait and I went with DID ZVMX and JT sprockets (cca £180).
Original regina chains are quite soft, so i would not assume after 1000m any damage, or change to sprockets

Is the sprocket that go with the M Endurance chains actually different or BMW just wants new sprockets so it wears into the M Endurance chain?

I was in exactly the same situation and the dealer quoted me a price of £235 plus fitting and an expected delivery date of December but couldn't even give a date for the special link required. In my naivety I assumed it included the sprockets!

However, after giving it some thought, doing a bit of research and listening to comments when this subject was previously discussed on here, decided to give if a miss and replace with aftermarket higher quality ones when they require changing. I just can't get my head around the idea of a "maintenance free" chain and even the sales guy told me on the QT not to waste my money!

I do own the bike
I am sorely tempted to wait until this chain is worn as Covid means I will probably not be doing the ballistic miles (25K)I was doing every year hence changing to S1000XR from GSA
The new sprockets are same as the current ones so seems crazy
Maybe the advice here is right wait until it’s worn out
After a glass of wine tonight I am tempted to pay up before reading this but that’s nearly £500 I am never getting back in value on the bike
I lube chains regularly but not great at stretching them usually wait for service in the past.
How difficult is it?
I wonder if Vines would do the whole thing for £300 versus my lot who are nearest dealer to them at £480

So the chain doesn’t wear, but grinds the grit into the sprockets and wears them down preferentially?

My dealer advised me not to bother and just get a quality replacement when the time arrives, apparently savings are minimal due to increased sprocket wear, particularly if you can't do this for yourself. Personally , I quite enjoy cleaning and lubing my chain, I take pride in it and enjoy trying different/new products.

IMHO, the best way to have a "maintenance free" chain and extend its life is to fit a Scottoiler
