2020 Forks
« on: October 22, 2020, 12:09:00 PM »
Talking to a friend with a 2019 S1000RR at the weekend, who has his bike in for a repair/replacement of the fork(s).  I have a similar issue on my 2020 XR in that at slow speed (walking pace to <20mph ish) there is 'clunking'.  There is no problem at higher speed and the damping performance of the forks are fine.  It almost feels as if the headstock is loose, but it is not.

My friends RR has been diagnosed with something loose in the fork internals that revels itself at low speed because of the way the damping valve is fully open at that point.

I suspect mine is the same (same issue, same Marzzochi fork) but will report back when it goes in on 28th October.
Anybody else with a 2020 having a similar issue?  Not sure how common this is with the Marzzochi fork type.
Regards
Scotti

Is the issue a single clunk or does it move back and forth at a certain speed range? (20 - 30mph) kinda feeling like warped discs but not warped??
Mate of mine is having an issue with his '16 xr

you sure the clunk isnt the spring mechanism in the adjustable screen?

The clunks are noticeable when moving over a surface like a gravel car park or a concrete-rippled or block-paved driveway.  The clunks are related to the bumps in the surface not the bike speed directly.  Definitely not the screen.

My first thought too! The spring mechanism in the screen doesn't seem strong enough to hold the quite heavy screen stable. When riding over bumps in the road it allows the screen to "bounce" resulting in a loud clunk.

The screen definitely clunks on bumps in the surface/road.

if its the front suspension or headtube, its easy enough to test by using the brakes, as that would trigger it, even on a smooth surface.

Have BMW diagnosed the issue?

Yes.  Dealer had feedback, eventually, from Tech Support and authorised replacement.
