What are these plugs please ?
on:
December 01, 2020, 12:55:11 PM
These are under the pillion seat
I think that:
1 is DWA
2 is to tail lights
3 maybe Auxillary tail lights (I hope)
I am looking to add high level LED tail light set to my top box.
I have looked at pp 177-179 in the owner's manual but still unsure.
What is the real answer please?

1 does look like DWA, 2 looks like the tail lights, but no idea where 3 goes.
When I added some rear lights to mine(now gone) this is the wiring I used, and I am pretty sure you sure going to have to tap into the wires coming out of plug 2:
brown - ground
green - tail light
blue(/white) - right turn
blue//red - left turn
last one - brake light
It was quite a while ago but have these written down

"It was quite a while ago but have these written down"
And that is only one reason that you are a Master. Thanks Simon

I am starting to think that 3 is another switched live socket with the same Garmin type connector as the one up front; by the forks
Anyone agree?

Looking at connector 3 on my '15 plate XR, it has the same colour coded wires as 3 of the wires that are used in the rear light assembly.
One is switched live, one is earth, and the other is lower voltage, which ties in with the existing pulsed rear tail light, (so a voltmeter doesn't see a full 12 volts, and I couldn't be arsed to get my scope out!!)
With that in mind, I'd suggest it's a for secondary set of rear lights, like you might find in an R1200RT, or 1600 topbox, or whatever. Now I don't know if any of them has lights (internal, rear, and brake) in its OEM topbox, it's just a guess. This is assuming a common loom between models is used.
Just my opinion. Happy to be wrong

Thanks philbuck. That would fit with the fact that the only place that those wires (3) could come from is the rear light assembly (2)

The connector is larger than the front one.
The third wire is 12 volts when the brake is applied.

The 3 wires in the small connector are the same 3 that go to the tail/brake & license plate lights. The license plate wire is 12 volts switched with the key, the tail/brake wire has a pulse width modulated signal to power the combined tail/brake light at 10% duty cycle when the brake is off and 100% when the brake comes on.
If you're looking for a switched power source, you can use the license plate light wire to activate a relay coming from the battery. You can't draw more than a few tenths of an amp from it before triggering a Lampr fault.
