Leaky fork on a 2021 XR?
on: December 21, 2020, 07:12:27 PM
My 2 months old, 1500 mile 20201 XR is showing oil residue on both fork legs.

Here is an image 75 miles after I wiped it clean.

Is this normal and expected (I am kind of new at this motorcycle thing)? Known issue? Warranty?

Thanks!

Manufacturers do sometimes pack a lubricant behind the fork dust seal which works it's way out after a few miles.  I've had this on a KTM.

As previous, probably installation grease I’d say. From my own experience fork oil is thin enough that it will pool at the bottom of the leg if it’s getting out in any quantity. Yours just looks like a band of install grease. Have a google for Seal Doctor if you fancy shelling out ~£25 on a cleaning tool that’s reasonably effective at cleaning seals out in-situ if you have a bit of grit under one.

I had exactly the same on my 2020 xr, wiped it off a few times then it just stopped. Like others say ,it will be an excess of install grease.

Went to dealer last week to get new tires on my 2021, and they noticed the oil residue and decided to claim warranty on it. But after the work, they tech was not sure if a real leak or overfilling. Time will tell.

There's technical information stating that the residue is not leaking forks.

Mine was leaking as well, I had it replaced under warranty. Its certainly does not leak the same after 2000 miles since.
Got to dealer and have it replaced, it would be expensive later on.

I agree with Paul. I have a 2016 bike looks like that. No oil leaking   I would not worry
