Disabling/removing exhaust servo on 2020 S1000XR?
on: December 25, 2020, 06:44:55 PM
I've never owned a bike with an exhaust servo before so I'm a bit of a noob. I woud like to make the 2020/21 S1000XR a little louder. Removing the cat makes the bike too loud imo and will get me in trouble with the police. A slip-on will not do much or nothing at all since most of the sound is dampened in the cat. This is why I would like to disable the exhaust servo.

I found this video that shows how to disable the exhaust servo on the 2016 S1000RR:

Is it as easy to do this on the 2020/21 S1000XR? Fault codes? Effects on BMW warranty? Better ways to do this? etc.

It's more or less exactly the same setup on the 2021, the guy in the video was a bit of a butcher , broke the cover ,using rusty old adjustables .Bet his bike is littered with rounded nuts and fastenings. Give it a try, if it doesn't work out for you just reconnect. I very much doubt you'll get fault codes unless you meddle with the actuator at the other en of the cables. Someone must have done this already.
I'm not fully conversant as to the exact function of this little butterfly valve, I'm pretty sure it must affect emissions at lower revs ,and also decibels at tickover /lower revs. Someone on here will know the exact answer and help us all to understand a little better.

disconnect as per the video(but me nicer to the equipment!!!!). you will get different replies as to what the exhaust valve does, personally I think it is just for noise emissions, but I am sue others will come along with opposing theories.

if your going to do it, do it all the way not half assed like the guy in that video . :008:
Remove the servo from the bike so you can remove the cables  completely, then put the servo back and leave it plugged in

:0461:, but that is not really 'all the way'!! that would be removing the servo-motor completely and installing a servo-buddy!  :821:

You are of course correct, but just leaving the servo in place saves 60 bucks... so thats 60 bucks to spend on something else for the bike... :001:

Having noticed that my XR seems to exhaust out of both hypershot pipes,  today I took the cover off to check the operation. The servo valve seems to be stuck open, even with the cables disconnected. Is that possible? I do mostly ride in dynamic.

Open is the default position when the bike is not running . Removing the cables keeps it open all of the time ..When operational, the valve closes when you start the bike and then will open when commanded by the ECU.
