My 2021 XR is "Keyless", meaning I keep the fob in my tank bag or jacket pocket. I keep my small plastic backup key in a separate location on my person. To start the bike using the backup key, you hold next to the sensor ring when turning on the bike. Sensor ring location varies by year and model; it's under the body work at the rear of gas tank for me.
