    Dead Yuasa Battery
    on: April 22, 2021, 02:39:43 pm

I have had my bike in store over the winter with the BMW trickle charger attached via the Bus input. So when I come to start the bike today, the ignition dashboard came on, but the engine wouldn’t turn over. I then attached the charging leads direct to the battery and am coming up with battery not found.

I am now charging the battery on a friends charger to see if I can rescue the battery. So basically is the Battery at fault or the BMW charger? Very annoyed as had some serious riding in mind.

    How old is the battery?

How old is the charger? Is it definitely a canbus compatible model?

The battery on the XR is very accessible so I charge direct to the battery as this removes one variable from the equation.

Although, my charger, an Optimate 4, works fine through the accessory socket on both of my BMW bikes with canbus.

Hard to know if the charger has been working.

Did you plug it in, switch on ignition to open the canbus port, then switch off?

If it hasn't been charging, and the battery has been flat while temperatures have been sub-zero - then you might have a duff charger AND a duff battery now.

Have a try at charging the battery and see how it performs, but for the sake of £60max  - I'd change the battery anyway.

The car battery charger that has a 12v optional output did the trick, so at least can start the bike. Beginning to think that I am going to invest in an Optimate and get a new battery. The current is only two years old so can’t believe that it’s knackered already.

There is no need for this with the original BMW charger. As soon as you plug it into the power socket on the bike, it will open the port, detect the battery and start charging

Okay, my BMW charger (thought it was the original, had it since around 2008) - doesn't.

(admittedly, I have only used it on bikes up to and including the Euro3 XR)

Similar happened to me....This is my experience....with a lithium battery and the latest, (black) BMW battery charger...I reckon once the battery is initially charged, the BMW charger goes into "sleep" mode...it is then unable to "wake up" the canbus system.
The only way to keep your battery charged, is to attached charger directly to the battery.

I have binned the BMW charger and invested in an Optimate 6 which recognises the battery and charging nicely. Great to be back on the road again!

My battery still playing up. Can anyone recommend an alternative that actually holds its charge and where best to buy? Thanks

Many rate Shido lithium, but I tried one and it was poor at starting (see recent Shido which one thread). Maybe I had a duffer but it went back.

Grabbed a Yuasa YTZ12S (I believe it is) from Tanya Batteries. Awesome battery and service. HTH
