Possible regulator rectifier issue?

Noticed while out yesterday that my clocks suddenly lit up like a Christmas tree, odometer stopped, rev counter dropped to zero,  E-DESA warning flashing but the bike continued to run normal.
I was about 30 miles from home, so pushed on. While riding I noted that everything returned normal when the clutch was pulled in but when bananas when the clutch was released, or the speed dropped to below 15Mph.

Finally got home and noticed both headlamps had blown, so I replaced these within my spares. These blew a few minutes earlier, so I suspected an over-voltage issue. Checked voltage battery terminals when engine off, 13v and rise to 15-16v when started and then 17v when given a rev.

All battery terminals where tight, so I suspect regulator rectifier issue. I did change the battery last September for an Exide, but doubt this could be the issue. 

Earliest the dealer can look is May 11th, but hopefully whatever the issue the extended warranty will cover it.

Anybody else had anything similar.

Your voltage regulator on the alternator is goosed.

Won't have been doing your battery any good either I don't think (and possibly other less robust electronics)

I'm sure it is of no comfort that it is a rare occurrence.

Make sure that the dealer has a list of all your symptoms and readings and check that at the very least - he has the VR in stock prior to bike going in (not so much help if other items are goosed too)

Thanks for the reply, yeah I don’t doubt it’s the regulator. I will get a new battery before it goes in and I will give em a call and update as to the voltage issue, in the vain hope they order in the part ready.

Update, I acquired a genuine BMW s1000rr Reg / Rec of EBay, which is the same part, swapped em over and all sorted, voltage never exceeds 14.8v when out on the road and all seems good.

Interesting because even with my bad memory that is the first R/R fail that’s been on here, we’re as years ago they went belly up on bikes as regular as clockwork.

I haven’t found anything regard this issue over the Net so assume it isn’t a regular occurrence. Don’t know why it happened, but will have to keep a close eye on things in case there is an underlying cause, though what that maybe?

I’m cursing  , keep my bikes years and particularly when a new model comes out second hand stuff sell for peanuts when every is still shouting warranty, bought no end of stuff for peanuts years back, never gave the R/R a thought..bugger.

Other than bodywork parts for the XR do seem pretty cheap, especially compared to the RR.

I am guessing you will be able to get a cheap decent MOSEFET replacement reg for the the XR should your fail winger, so I would not worry too much.

What spares do you have in stock at the moment?

Admittedly it was only a quick look but I couldn’t find a cheap R/R, and now with it being an old model...., of the various bits and bobs i’ve Bought over the years, the Best Buy was a 500 mile fuel pump and I paid peanuts for it, that must be 3/4 years ago.

Just looked in the goodie box.., see there’s coil sticks as well.

Another  ferret about...a brand new pair of rider foot rest assembly’s both left and right with gear/ brake lever.

Mine (2016 model) failed when the bike was less than a year old.  Usual crap service from BMW dealer who took four weeks to diagnose it despite me telling them that was almost certainly the problem, then another two to get a replacement from Germany! Interestingly at the same time I was re-commissioning a 1959 Model 50 Norton and got an alternator and reg/rec off the shelf
