    Navigator Alternative

Wanted to share some info on an item that I bought for the XR which seems to be ideal if you do not want or cannot (like me) use the BMW Navigator. My XR is Navigator prepared so I just clipped the device (link below) onto the connector and then a spring clip holds the mobile phone in place. It uses the power source from the existing Navigator preparation via a set of wires that have connections ,3, for iPhone and android etc.Bingo...when connected it works well and feels solidly held in the connector. If you do not have the Nav prep it comes with a bracket and wires to fit.My only small criticism would be that you cannot lock the phone into place so it might get stolen if you left it on the bike.Seems like a ,relatively well made, great buy for the money with more than 100+ positive reviews. Shipping from China was quite slow but thats normal. :002:

Much better out there on Fleabay!

I use this which fits to the Nav pre-wire setup, biggest diff is it use no wires, your phone is charged wirelessly so just clip it in and fire up Google Maps!

Could you post some pictures please? Looking at the E Bay ad, I'm not sure if it will fit my Nav 6 mount. Thanks

I went for the cable option as I had read mixed reports about wireless charging .Although to be fair this unit gets good reviews

I got one of these but wasn't impressed - the nav feature of the BMW Connected App is rubbish and it doesn't work with the wizzy wheel - its just a moving map, no other info like distance to waypoints and ETAs etc.  On the other hand its a very cheap alternative to shelling out ££££'s for the Nav 5 or 6.  I guess if you use it with something like Google Maps or Calimoto it's probably a bit better.  Also with my phone the very strong clip sits directly over the volume down button so suddenly your music is effectively muted.  For that reason, despite its limitations, I went back to using my Nav 5 which is still going strong after 5 years.

I use the BMW connected app on my phone. It is a moving map on the phone but shows the distance to run and ETA etc on the TFT. The wheel allows you to do things with the navigation like deleting the next waypoint etc. Would never bolt an inferior dedicated GPS unit to my bike again.

Didn't realise it did this - thanks for mentioning it Bob - might have another play with it.

Bob, when the phone is in the cradle on its side, does the moving map display in landscape mode. The BMW connected app seems to be locked in portrait - meaning that the map display will be on its side.

    Cheers

Not sure on that one as the cradles on both bikes are mounted portrait. There is an option within the menu of the app to show auto, landscape or portrait so I assume it works both ways.
