    Transmission 'whine'

I test rode a 2016 XR yesterday. I heard a whining sound as it geared down and/or slowed down to a stop. It didn't sound familiar or right. I rode one about a year ago and don't recall hearing this. I am looking at getting on another XR before I full the trigger on this deal that otherwise looks good. My other bike is a K 1200 S who's transmission just blew on me....... but it was pretty quiet when it worked. Anybody have anything on this? Is it common or is it the red flag I think it is?

No it's normal if it goes up and down with speed, you can hear it when low revs and the bike is quiet, listen to some onboard GT3 cars it's the same sort of whine, it's because they have straight cut gears instead of helical cut. Most bikes have straight cut gears but I've heard the while on pretty much every XR I've seen. Suzukis are notorious for gearbox whine, especially the the bigger ones. It's just one of those things.

Never ridden my X/R without ear plugs so in all honesty couldn't say if it whines or not on the down shift, as for the gearbox going bang on your K1200...mine has just done the same on my R Sport and my solution!!!

Its a 1300 but only the box and clutch are being used.
