    Metzeler Roadtec 01 V 01SE

    Hi,

I am seeking advice and peoples experiences on the Metzeler Roadtec 01 and 01SE tyre. One of the tyres factory fitted is the Roadtec 01, but what I am after is people who can give feedback on whether the 01 SE is a noticeable improvement over the 01.
My XR has the Metzeler Roadtec 01 fitted from factory, I have now covered 10,000klms on them and there is still roughly 40-50% of tread depth remaining. My riding would be considered to be more of the spirited type. I am quite impressed with the tyre and would continue using them, but if the 01 SE is a better all round tyre, then please give your opinion on why.

    Thanks.

    1) if you have 6k miles on 50% of an 01, I'd say you do not ride "spirited" (I get 3000 miles from a full rear 01 and I'm no racer)
    2) My understanding is the 01se is same compound in centre but softer compound on edges, so do you need more grip on the side of the tyres? Personally I don't see any advantage for road use for the extra cost of the se

I can assure you I do ride in a spirited manner, if you do it smoothly you get the advantage tyre life and fuel economy.

But you are not nailing it out of a corner and testing the tyres level of grip if you are doing that. You may still have good mid corner speed but its not the same.

Pulling wheelies out of every corner is probably also a bit past spirited riding lol I think we've discussed this in the past and it's mainly down to road surfaces. I genuinely get around 10k miles out of all my tyres and I do trackdays on them too. Even the current front on my XR is coming up on 11k miles and it still has a little bit to give, rears are 4k and still plenty of life. And I most definitely hoon it out of corners and into corners.

Wow I only get 2 track days out of a rear v02 slick on my 765RS track bike.

I dont think I am nutter but genuinely have seen off a rosso 3 in under 3k miles. 01s in about 4-4.5.

I honestly don't know how I could get 10k miles out of a 01 on the rear.

Fair play though, sure keeps the bills down.

Tyre wear actually looks a bit better woth the ktec setup tough. I am not getting the little lips on the sipes anymore, so think the rebound is in better control. Off to Scotlan for 9 days soon, so will see how I get on. A similar trip saw off a set of S22s last year.

Race tyres that's fair, I only got 4k miles out of a rear Power 5 on my old 650, but that went on like 3 trackdays. Road 5s though, I think I've said somewhere before, all sets 11-13k riding the same way. Soft sporty tyres like Rossos etc are probably around that 3-5k range, but for sport tourers, I grew to expect 10k.

You’re getting a lot of life out of those. I have them, and think they are good, but was surprised to get an advisory during my MoT at the weekend on the front as have only done about 3000 on them.

I currently have the 01 SE’s fitted. As does my friend.
    Never again. They’re crap IMO.
Spirited riding?  These will be done within 3.5k miles.
We’re currently touring Spain. The grip levels of these tyres are also poor (IMO), despite the dual compound.
    I’m very disappointed with them.
As soon as I return to the UK it’ll be another pair of Road 5’s for certain.  They’re such a superior tyre, there’s just no comparison to the Metzeler’s unfortunately.

It's so strange how people's experiences differ, i am the total opposite, had 01's loved them, tried the Road 5's and thought they were dog sh*t so went back to the 01's and well happy again 🤔
