    Vapour lock

    Hi all,

I have a question on vapour lock.
I used the search function but couldnt locate info about my question.

I have a 2018 XR and I have experienced what I think is vapour lock three times since owning. I've owned this bike for less than 12 month and it has 9500kms on it.

I've read on other forums that a new fuel pump and additional heat shield has solved the problem but it involved much haggling with BMW.
Anyway I wanted to see if others have managed to have the pump replaced and heat shield installed under warranty.
If so, can you share the part number of the shield and pump?

Particularly interested in hearing from Aussie owners as Im based in Sydney.

My warranty expires at end of October 2021.

    Thanks all!
    Tan

Well that’s a new’un on me I have to say, I have a spare pump and certainly cannot see how one could be altered considering it immersed in fuel...not to say its impossible BUT....would have thought fuel tank breathing is the problem.

I thought that fuel vaporisation (but in injector lines) was covered in this thread, as being a possible starting issue?

I spoke with BMW yesterday and they confirmed Vapour lock or 'hot start' issue is a known issue within a certain range of VIN numbers. Mine falls within this range. They have agreed to fix the issue but have to diagnosed via a procedure (process of elimination) as advised by BMW Head Office.

    All covered under warranty.

It also has a "replaceable" fuel filter as part of that assembly, (not the mesh thing on the side).....although it's not mentioned in any of the "service" information.

    Smithy.

When I die, I want to go peacefully in my sleep like my Grandfather....not screaming like the passengers in his car..!

Done/doing the same with this X/R as i’ve done with other bikes when planning for the long haul, bought loads of bits and bobs years ago for absolute peanuts as there was zero demand for such.
