Changing rear brake pads for the first time 😊

I removed the rear wheel (first time) to have a new tyre fitted and decided to replace the brake pads while I have the wheel off.I checked the new pads and they are the correct type/shape etc.I removed the old pads from the calliper after removing the split bar clip (R clip) and the locking bar/pin.I cleaned the calliper and pushed the pistons back to ensure that everything would fit.So far so good. But....when I try to reinstall the calliper over the rotor the lower part of the left pad falls out of the calliper....the right one does not.I have tried to see if they should be more locked in place but have not found the answer but the pad being loose at the front seems worrying .I have a Haynes manual and Marks Service manual and cannot find the answer.It is better to refit the wheel and callipers without the pads in and then install the pads once the wheel etc is back in position.? Any help or guidance much appreciated.TIA. Simon.

this is what I do, the only pain here is getting the pin knocked all the way seated in.

Thanks Simon for the advice.I will give it a try tomorrow as  I saw a number of youtube videos ,albeit on the rr , that recommended doing it this way.

It didn't seem awfully complicated when I did it, pin out, slide the old pads out, news slid straight in, tiny fiddling to get the end piece to sit properly so it doesn't just flop down (seems to sit on a little "ledge") but nothing else holding the pads afaik, pin back in, been fine for thousands of miles so I'm sure I got it in right.

Thanks again for the help and advice.I put the wheel back in without the pads in.Loosely tightened it and then inserted the new pads into the calliper.Much easier.Then put the retaining screw in and R clip.Seems to be fine  Now onto the front wheel
