no service manual coming from bmw?????!!!!!

After numerous emails with BMW headquarters saying that they would be making a service manual available in the coming future almost a year later they finally admitted that they will not be doing it and it never is going to happen from someone who enjoys working on their own bike and would like to know the proper torque settings for things like checking valve adjustment etc. this is ludicrous and even though this is a fun bike to ride I will not be taking it to the dealership to be worked on this is a copy of the final response from BMW. This was my first BMW but not my first new motorcycle and it may as well be my last BMW if I cannot work on it without guessing at what numbers to turn the  wrench :013: :151:

    Dear Mr. Sloat,

thank you again for your email.

We were informed by the reponsible colleagues that BMW Motorrad will not produce repair DVDs anymore. The requested manual is not available. In case of any questions regarding the service of your S 1000 XR please get in touch with your local BMW Motorrad dealer. They will be more than happy to assist you.

    Kind Regards,

It's mainly to stop people like you and many others from doing maintenance/service work/repairs on their own bikes.....they want you to take it to a BMW dealer so they can charge you for the pleasure....understandable to a certain point.

Been like this for quite a while, thought people were aware. Not good but it is what it is.  :006:

I think we'll find this more and more from all manufacturers with both with bikes and cars, I'm afraid this is modern life, remember the anti tampering Law's that are going to be with us soon! :151:

Personally I don't service my XR not because I cannot but because I cannot be arsed, I do however service my F800st. The point I guess is if you want to you should be able to which is your right as you own the bike and not BMW.
Plenty of us have the aptitude to do a service and the kit to perform it to a good standard, maybe if BMW are watching this and other sites they may put the manual's on line with some very long disclaimer, if we make a enough of a fuss.  "Come you S1000RR & GS sites"

Update: have a listen to The Hackers series 1 "Broken" on BBC Iplayer radio 4

Great.  Now I have to make a decision if I am going to keep my XR after the warranty expires.  The dealer told me when I purchased mine earlier this year that they would have the manual out "soon." No way I am paying BMW prices for maintenance and repairs.  I am an software engineer and with the a proper repair manual, I was able to replace shift forks and two gears on my FJR.  There is no way I would have attempted that without the repair manual.

    Really disappointed by this.

I've been to the dealership and have work done only to come home and take it back apart and put it together the right way because they put bolts in the wrong holes and clips in the wrong locations and parts blocking other parts where they don't belong I do not trust mechanics at dealerships they are trying to do it on piecework as quickly as they can so they can make a buck and honestly I've been to numerous dealerships Kawasaki BMW Ford and Dodge and I always walk out wondering why I wasted my money for someone to do it wrong and tie up 3/4 of my day I was a mechanic for two years before I began my permanent job and have no issues understanding how to take something apart or put it back together but I do need the proper torque numbers when you're dealing with stuff like cams pistons clutch parts essential driveline parts there's a reason why they design an engineer a torque spec to a part it is so that you will not damage it by pulling on it too tight or so that it will not fall off if you do not pull on it enough

This is the email address that I was corresponding with that stated there would be a manual and now stated there would not be a manual if anyone else would like to give it a try maybe we can get enough people talking to them so they reconsider the really quite helpful when you want to buy the motorcycle and then when you want to work on the motorcycle they're nowhere to be found     motorrad@bmw.de

I’d be far more inclined to talk to Mark Barrett or Haynes manuals, little point in conversing with BMW it’s not in their interest.

As long as you haven't yet loosened any nuts you can get the torque setting. It's a bit fiddly the first time you do it but just document and then build your own reference manual with torque settings.
Here is a you tube video that shows you how
