    Clutch or Chain rattle?

So I have had this noise on my 2016 XR for a few months. Started making a noise when I would release the clutch and take off from a stop. Sounds loud and sharp like someone shaking a tin can of marbles or gravel. I checked and tightned my drive chain, I installed a manual cam chain tensioner and checked every moving or bolted part that I can but I still cant find this noise. I am at 12000 miles and the chain and sprockets seem fine but maybe they are worn or there might me a rock or debris in the cover for the front sprocket? Maybe something broken in the clutch? Anyone know of any other rattles besides cam chain?

Could it be the dreaded cam/rocker issue.?? It would do it all the time if that were the case. There have been some Gen-1 RR's reporting clutch rattle, but that's at idle, in neutral with the clutch out, not in gear under load.

Pop the front sprocket cover off and check the sprocket, might be worn past it's use-by date.

Did you figure out what the issue was? Mine just started doing the same thing this week.

I had a similar problem on my 2016 XR. Mine was caused by a failing chain. I had neglected my chain to the point where the rollers in between the plates were falling off the chain. I was close to the same amount of mileage you're at. It would rattle heavily at higher speeds. When I changed the chain, I counted that I was missing approximately 46 rollers from the chain. A couple chunks of the rollers were pasted near the front sprocket from grime. If it was very loose when you checked the slack, it might be the same issue.

Yep that is the conclusion I came to, I can move my chain side to side like towards the tire too much so I am pretty sure that's the noise. I have been slowly accumulating all the parts. Chains are hard to find these days. Thank you for your input.

Glad you got it figured out. I was at my dealer yesterday and the parts guy was telling me the same thing about the chain supply. I hope you can get it handled soon.

    Chains hard to find?

120 quid, rubber JT sprocket front and jt rear, DID ZVMX chain, can't ask for much better than that, cheaper than my ER6

Sorry for my ignorance, only just noticed you're in the US, but surely still a good deal.

Ya not in the US, I can find shorter chains all day long, but the longer ones the XR needs are super hard to find. One company wanted $200 USD just for the chain alone. I finally found a DID for $136 shipped.
