S1000XR 2019 Cam Chain Silver Tensioner Cap

    Hi fellow S1000XR people,

I have a 2019 S1000XR and I recently changed out the black cam chain tensioner cap for the "upgraded" silver one at 40,000km. I am feeling paranoid about the cam chain issue that the Gen 1 S1000XR is facing and I am unsure if my cam chain rattling sounds normal or abnormal. I have taken a video of the bike's cold start + some revving at the end of the video and hope you guys can provide me some feedback based on your experience.

Really appreciate your help on this matter. Thank you!

Please see the following video that I have uploaded to youtube.

That's not cam chain rattle, if it was, it usually only happens for a second or two after a cold start then goes away as oil pressure comes up. Sounds like you may have the dreaded cam/rocker issue, best get it checked by your local BMW dealer.

In all honestly at 40k km the rocker issue would have reared it's head way sooner, that doesn't sound quite right but it might just be camera/microphone, in all honesty these engines are really loud and rattly even in perfect condition. If you can, get it checked out but it might very well be nothing.

thank you for everyone for your inputs! will get it check out during my 60k km servicing.

I do get some buzzing sound when i am in the 4k-5k RPM range. Not sure what is causing it! I have glued the edge of my mirrors but the buzzing is still there.

Any ideas what might be causing this?

To be honest your bike doesn't sound bad at all, that sort of rattle I would expect from an XR, maybe a little on the loud side though. I don't think it's fairing pieces rattling but worth going over the bike, tapping it seeing if it's loose or buzzy somewhere. That 4-5k buzz is natural to this engine but can be worse or better. What I'd think is that the silver cap tensioner wasn't enough and you might need a manual tensioner but if it didn't rattle with the Black one, started rattling, then you replaced it with the silver and it stopped rattling, then started again, it might be something else. So i can't in good conscience tell you to splash money on an MCCT when it might not be the issue, if there is one at all.
