Good evening all - Thinking of up-grading my wheels - any suggestions> Thinking of Carbon as that would be the best weight saving but concerned about using them on the road - anybody got any experience of using them - would be pleased to hear everyone's opinion - Thank you and good night early start tomorrow

If using carbon wheels on the road, stone chips and pot holes are not your friend...have seen many a carbon wheel destroyed in general use on the road. Yes they're light and improve handling etc..... they are indeed strong but don't like sudden hits like pot holes as they can be a bit "brittle" for want of a better word. They tend to break rather than "dent" or deform like normal wheels when hit hard.

    Smithy.

Not the correct term used there, strong they are, but they are also not ductile and break rather than bend. In actual fact carbon wheels are way stronger than even forged wheels, but their stiffness works against them in anything impact related.

    You're quite right Sir... :028:

I'll edit my post to reflect that.

Blimey...you frightened me to death...had a lifetime of early starts although in fairness only every other week and I was paid well to do e’m before I managed to escape.

Re aftermarket wheels do you have any experience of using them? Any reason why you want carbon? And before you ask 😀 run two bikes with carbon one BST the other Dymag and 3 with mag/alloy all Dymag.

In a search for more agility I wanted to get carbon wheels as well. However, considered the cost of all parts including wheels would be ~$5000 I simply can’t justify. In my next bike I will opt for the forged / carbon while ordering, that seems the most economical way.

I go touring with my mate on his street Triple, he must have put 30K miles on his BST carbon wheels. Mixed roads etc etc. He has had some slight damage to the finish in places, but they are still going strong.

The OP will have to check, but when the post turned up do not remember looking at carbon options hence why I went mag/alloy.
