    Instrument panel / dashboard issue

    Dear readers,

STATUS: cable break was not the issue.

Might be wise to check if your cables cant get caught by the seat

update: my garage found a small cable break in januari. I only tried a couple of times, but it looks fixed for now.

I come here for your help because im quite confused.

For about a year i own a 2016 xr. Since two weeks i have the following issue. In about 60-70% of the times when i try to start my bike the following happens:

Turn on ignition, bmw navigator 5 gets power, but the entire dashboard is not working (not even rpm counter) also the instrument panel doesnt work (blinkers, controls), but the bike just starts when i use start button.

The problem is not worked around by just turning the ignition on and off a couple of times. Now comes the weird part.. after the dashboard / instrument panel doesnt turn on and i turn the ignition back off. The dashboard and instrument panel works after i roll the bike forward one meter and then turn on the ignition again.

First time i thought it was coincidence but this has worked with 100% succes rate since i found out. 15 times roling the bike forward has fixed it in a row.
Anyone ever experienced or heard about this? My repair shops BMW expert is on vacaction for a couple of weeks and im worried my "trick / workaround" stops working soon.

Thank you for reading my post.

Check the battery terminals are tight.

That’s weird, but if rolling the bike is changing the result, it would be worth checking the wheel/abs sensors as well.

Check if the dash comes on the same time your headlights do when you roll the bike forward, if so, might be a canbus related issue

If i roll it forward with the ignition on, nothing comes on at all with respect to the dashboard / instruments. I have to turn the ignition off then roll it, then turn ignition on again. So the lights cant go on during rolling. Sorry if i wasnt specific in my explanation.

Weird indeed. I think you have a bad instrument panel connection. If the bike starts, then EWS and everything else works. You just don't have instruments. Take it off, sse how it looks. Not too much work. Often just taking the connector off and back on a few times cleans any surface corrosion, use WD 40 and let it dry out before putting back together

And check battery voltage after key on but before start. Atter running the engine the battery has a high 13+V surface tension. That is gone as soon as you put some load on it, and you'll see the real state of the battery

I have exactly the same fault, still not worked out what the issue is.

It never goes off when riding, just sometimes I turn key no dash.

I have taken to riding off then turning key on and off and bumping the bike, 8 out of 10 times it then comes back on.
