Gen 1 XR Broken down :( sounds like a bag of spanner’s

    Hello everyone,

So unfortunately my 2018 XR broke down on the ride home yesterday from Plymouth to Home.

I thought the bike was sounding noisier than normal whilst riding around Picos and Pyrenees’s, but everyone assured me I was being silly.

4 miles from my Home the bike lost power, was sounding like it was running rough, clattering sound and just cut out.

It’s a 2018 with 19k miles on the clock and no warranty. The mission I had getting RAC to recover me home yesterday at 2am after braking down at 8:30pm (took over 5 hours) and then persuading them today to recover bike to dealership:(.

I’ve now got to wait until end of September before they can take a look.

I am really worried it’s something terminal.

I had only just had 18k service done last month at dealership and valve clearance checked.

    Please prey for me lol

    Prey/pray  :015:

‘Clattering’ - that’s never going to be a cheap fix. :431:

Surely you can ask some "questions" if you had your bike dealer serviced at 18k and it failed immediately. after... Even if it is terminal it won't cost you an arm and a leg, relatively, used engines with little miles can be had for as little as 900 quid if you shop around, not much more than a major service. I reckon they either messed something up during the 18k service or you just got extremely unlucky, don't lose faith as generally these machines are extremely reliable.

Make sure you keep an eye on them whilst they are diagnosing the problem, just in case...

Might even be worth carting it to another dealer to do the post-mortem.  I dunno if I would trust them to be honest.

Yep...I'm here  :001:....curious to know what actually happened to the poor thing.

@XRRich...was it a sudden noise change or was it a slow increase in noise over your trip.??

"Clattering sound and cutting out" doesn't sound good though, if it were the dreaded cam/rocker issue they usually still run but noisy. The cutting out is a strange one, they have a cam sensor on the exhaust cam...so I wonder if she's broken a cam or dropped a valve...or similar..??

All speculation of course until we find out for sure. :084:

    Smithy.

Thanks everyone, bike is with dealer so will just have to wait and see.

So the bike was noisy on tour, just sounded more mechanical noisy than usual and through the rev range rather than just whilst engine is cold.

Kinda like a tapping sound which increased in speed but not sound with revvs, but went away if I pulled the clutch in.

The bike started running rough like it was on 3 cylinders on motorway near home, loss of power and throttle response and just died.

I was daft enough to listen to the others on tour who told me I was hearing things and was nothing to worry about :(

Can’t wait for the bill :(

2 separate issues going on here.

The OP’s situation and manual cam chain adjuster theme, Smithy let me down cuz I thought he’d go the manual route.

As for the OP, my money is on the cam chain adjuster going kaput, chain has lost tension and jumped the sprockets, the decision is repair or another motor(legal) cuz theirs plenty of dodgy stuff knocking about, I needed a gearbox for my K1200r Sport and bought a K1300 engine just for the box so i’ve Been there done that and the OP will need his dancing shoes on when looking at motors.

As for repairing a motor at a franchised dealer....best of luck...will be on par with paying their gas bill.
