I had my side stand down and selected 1st gear, engine stalled which as per the handbook is correct, but on pressing start switch engine failed to turn over. I left the bike for five minutes and it re started.  Is the time lapse a built in safety measure after stalling ?

If the sidestand is down and in gear, it will never start...if the stand is up an in gear, it still won't start unless you pull the clutch in.
