2022 Recall - Clutch cover bolts
    on: October 12, 2022, 01:05:15 am

    Hi Folks,

I recently (friday) joined the family by purchasing a 2022 S1000XR.  Talking with the dealership today about when I can pick it up they were a bit cagey and said there is a recall that needs to be applied before I can accept delivery.  I've asked for details of the recall and did a google search but haven't seen any recalls for 2022.

Anyone familiar with a recall that was just announced, or any for 2022?  Also any reliable sources for recall information?

    Thanks.

The only one I have read about recently was clutch cover bolts...something about threadlocker or antiseize or something being applied wrong or in the wrong quantity or something that could cause an oil leak.  With the frequency of leaking water pumps I am kind of surprised that isn't the recall, but maybe that doesn't affect the 22's.  I am still waiting for parts for my '21 and they were ordered like 6 weeks ago..

EDIT:  Just dug it up on the book of faces, but can't vouch for its authenticity:

DELIVERY STOP: Replacing clutch cover screws
    Models Affected: S1000R, S1000RR, M1000RR, S1000XR (2022 and 2023)
    Situation:
The clutch cover screws can loosen. Too thick an anti-friction coating on the threads can lead to a loss of preload in the screw connection.
    Result:
The screws can loosen, oil can then spray on the right side of the rear tire as well as on the catalytic converter. Dangerous driving situations therefore cannot be excluded.
    Measure:
    Unavailable right now.

I would surmise that they are using that dry thread lock.   As such - it provides a resistance to installation torque which might reduce the actual bolt stretch.

Use of liquid thread lock would prevent that, but increases assembly times on the production line.

Thanks for the reply folks.  I'll wait patiently and hope the weather holds on for a few more weeks.   :164:

Sorry to hear you're still waiting, but glad to know I'm not the only one in this boat.  It's been more than a week now and the dealership hasn't been very forthcoming about what the recall is, nor how long it will take to resolve.

We've been lucky here the past few weeks with the weather (high teens and a drought) and I'm missing a great opportunity to break in the bike.  Much longer and it'll get colder, and likely wetter.

Seems like a big difference between dealers in Europe and those in North America.  When asking about loaners or demo's while I wait all I get are laughs.

Agreed..  free engines and labor when they blow up outside of warranty, loaner bikes, etc.  I was kind of astonished when I first read all those posts.  I have never heard of anything like that happening in the states.  When I need work done at a dealer I have to trailer my bikes and drop them off...never been offered a loaner in almost 10 years of BMW ownership across a couple of different dealers.  :027:
