I'd rather lean towards the Shell Advance Ultra 4t, comes out at ~28 quid for 4 liters and it's basically the same stuff BMW OEM use.

5/40 on a K1200/K1300 is a necessity but on an X/R is a new one on me.

oh dear, a simple recommendation of a deal, now at risk of morphing into an oil thread...

When it comes to which manufacturer…I have no choice in the matter, but blimey 10/40 to 5/40 with the K1200/1300 bike is a mechanical necessity but I wasn’t aware their is a similar long story with the X/R or have I missed it.

yes, you have missed it. The manual for both of my 2016 BMWs (R1200RS & S1000XR) says 5w/40 API SL and JASO MA2. I do not think BMW recommends any other oil across the range since they swapped to the stuff made by Shell.

The manual is that funny paper thing under the seat of the bike.
