I decided to reconnect the cables at the servo valve, check operation (all good) before putting the cover back on, and then go for a ride to see if the engine light went out.  It did not, something that I prefer to be the case before I start removing both ends of the cable or fitting a servo buddy.  From others' experience, will it go out over time / engine on cycles / servo operation cycles / mileage, or am I looking at a GS911 / dealer removal of the check code?

    Cheers.

The fault code will normally stay in memory until it is erased, even if the light is off and the fault has been rectified...You don't need a GS-911....Motoscan will be able to erase the fault code.

    Cheers, Smithy.   :763:

Being new to BMW bikes forgive the question, but I presume that you mean this: https://www.bmdiag.co.uk/motoscan-bmw-motorcycle-diagnostic-kit

    If so, I'll buy one.

That'll probably work but I'd suggest getting the OBD-Link MX/LX....they seem to work well. Motoscan itself is just a simple download...Android only I believe.

Thank you, Smithy.  Prompted by your suggestion and the search that I performed on it, I see a device with what looks like physically the same OBD-II port as my car.  I didn't realise that this would be the case, expecting the connector for motorcycles to be smaller, due to packaging.  I might find that it doesn't work, but as the cost will be nothing more than my time and the whole point of OBD-II and SAE J1979 is standardisation of onboard diagnostics, I will tomorrow try my U480 OBD-II scanner that works fine with the car.

All vehicle OBD-II ports whether car or bike are made to a "standard" after Euro-4.... and this came in on the '17 model XR's. Prior to that the XR's were Euro-3 and had a round 10 pin connector.

Some Euro-4/5 protocols can confuse some diagnostic readers...not all of them work on the XR and some only partially work. XR's became Euro-5 for the 2020 model year....but the connector is the same as the Euro-4.

The one in this link is known to work with the XR's, I have one myself...they're spendy but much cheaper than the GS-911.

Cheers, Smithy.  Helpful insight to file away in my grey matter. I'll try my U480 tomorrow and go from there, but will now be amazed if it works rather than just surprised; from reading the following excellent article covering cars and bikes, I now know that my car (owned from new in 2003) is Euro 3, and this is what my scanner was purchased (approx 15 years ago) to work with.

I fitted the same with no errors codes and it sound great. It seems to run slightly better at lower reves (it maybe imagination but it feels that way)
