Broke down after break in service - throttle body replaced (fixed)

    Hi All,

Unfortunately having an awful time with what I hoped to be a lovely bike...

    The story thus far:

Bought the bike brand new last month January 2023, funnily enough paperwork went through and the bike was registered on Friday 13th, when I went to pick it up on the following Monday, it had 13 miles on the clock....superstitious I hope not....

Fast forward a month later and I had the first break in service done yesterday...at 668 miles, we joked at the dealer that had it been 2 miles less, it would have been serviced at 666 miles....okay this is getting interesting....

On the drive home following the service, manage 30 miles up the motorway and then I lose all power, there is 0 throttle response and the check engine light and ENGINE! Error pops up. FML.
Get on the phone to the dealer, they say to call BMW Assist who turn up within 30 mins which is pretty decent. Guy spends 2hrs diagnosing the issue and says there seems to be a problem with the throttle valve connector, but he just gave it a wiggle and it seems to solved things. His advice is that we ride back to the Dealership and get them to take a proper look. Drive back the 30 odd miles back there and theres 0 issues but I leave it with them and get the R18 monstrosity as a loan bike.

Now in present day, today, get a call saying they've fixed the issue after having a look. The tech found that there was some grease left on one of the copper connections between two plugs which is causing voltage to spike and killing the electronic throttle response and valves. They've sorted it out and I can come collect. I drive the 30 miles back down, pick up the bike as a happy bunny thinking finally I can let rip with the 1000cc 165hp fully!

    NOPE!

Break down again on the motorway....

Not sure what this is but a bit of a Whinge...i'm pissed my pride and joy is broken already at 600 miles and immediately following the first service.
    Really sad and disappointed.
Wondering if anyone else had an issue with the throttle cutting out and the engine warning error coming up???

Bike is now back with BMW having only ridden 600 miles and for 1 month of ownership from new.
Any thoughts as to what I should do/Press BMW to do?

Cheers mateys and hope all is well with everyone elses rocketships!

    C

Intermittent faults are always difficult to find - and I suppose they spent as much time as they could before handing it back to you 'seemingly' fixed.

The alternative would be for one of their employees taking it back and fore to work each day on his commute - for a week to have some confidence before handing back.

I do understand the frustration, though.

It’s only been the last day or so I’ve viewed the salty covered roads clean enough to ride a bike period…sorry I digress.

From the plus side in the time I’ve been on here do not recall another situation like yours so it’s just bad luck and as Mareng said, they’ll just have to plug it in and see what the electrics are doing, bloody annoying but truely a rarity, also a wake up call in the fact a GS 911 ownership new bike or otherwise is boardering on a necessity.

    The very best of luck.

Sorry to hear of your troubles. Nothing I've seen here or read about elsewhere. Seems very much like an assembly issue. As long as the dealer fully owns it, I would be understanding. It's not a problem with the bike design or engineering. It's could be a faulty part, or an assembly issue, which though hard to identify are not hard to solve, per se. Keep us posted.

I'm with those saying I would be inclined to take it back to the dealer and ask that they don't give it back to me until it is all sorted confidently and I can ride the damn thing across Europe with confidence.

We have had a few come in like this, not just XR's, and they have all been faulty throttles. Replace the throttle grip with associated electronics and the issue is gone. Like your dealership, the first couple of times diagnosing it was a complete pain, as when the bikes came in to us they were running and revving perfectly.

Speak with your dealership about goodwill from BMW, as you've had the bike such a short time before a failure BMW will want to do anything they can to restore your faith in the brand, even if it's the cost of your next service. It costs the dealership nothing, as BMW fully reimburse them, so don't let them say they can't do anything.

    Cheers

    Tony

Any news on this? Hope BMW steps up and makes sure your new bike gets a permanent fix ASAP.

Nothing as of yet, bike is still with dealer looking for faults. They did call me yesterday saying they're keeping it in a few more days. I did press them to change the whole throttle if they still don't know what's going on.

    Fingers crossed...

Throttle body is being fully replaced as next step. Needs to come in from Germany so may take 10 days to turn up. Given earlier comments, hopefully this is all that's required.

Had the R18 as a loan bike for 1 day
Now the 310GS but I said I want a bigger bike if mine is out of action for so long. Been promised a 1250RS on Saturday so will see.

You'll like the 1250RS, they're a very good motorcycle indeed. Surprisingly well behaved and handles well despite it's weight. Not as angry as the XR but still lifts it's skirt up and goes well.

If it breaks down for a 3rd time, don't let them keep fixing it - reject it and ask for a new one.
