Not convinced about the rivets, is it original chain or has it been replaced since? Either way if not for them, I'd look at a replacement just because of the kinks.

    Recommendations:

    Tsubaki Sigma XRG
    DID ZVMX

ZVMX is a fair bit cheaper and more cheerful, the Tsubaki last absolute ages.

Not sure if it's original or not. I'm 3rd owner. Hard to tell.

I went ahead and bought the Regina chain, I believe it's OEM and it came with steel sprockets. This one is low maintenance from what I figure out based on instructions. $309 from Hornig Germany. Very happy and highly recommended. Ordered Friday, came in Wednesday, fast shipping from Germany to US.

The M chains are not completely maintenance free.

There is still a need to clean and lube - just less often than for a standard chain

The other benefit is the frequency of chain adjustment - which seems to be also reduced

Yep, and I think they have even started calling them "reduced maintenance" chains now, which is a bit more realistic  :084:

This is my experience. I barely clean mine. Every now and then. Same with lube. I've hardly adjusted it in 20,000kms. Not an issue so far.

Would anyone suggest what chain tool I need for this chain?

Chain came with 2 diff links (Type 19) and (type 44)

    Chain: https://www.motorcycleparts-hornig.com/BMW-S-1000-XR-2020/Spares/Chain-Kit.html

    Links

Image says page 26, but which one?

I'd go with tool #4 and use the second joining link, the one with the hollow ends.

    Smithy.

I got even 16k miles out of the chain. It stretched .75 (3/4) link. I think I was really close to breaking it. Not doing that again.
