    S1000XR 2017 does not go beyond 126mph

    Hey fellow XR drivers!

My name is Lorenzo from the Netherlands and I'm following this helpfull forum for a while now.

A few weeks ago I traded my tuono v4 1100 for a stock S1000XR. Since I spend some time on the autobahn in Germany I noticed that my XR does not hit the top speed, not even close actually.

The XR has 17000km and is fully stock, with dynamic pro enabled. The engine revvs in the 1st till 4th gear until the rev limiter (12k rpm). The 5th gear stops around 10700 rpm and the 6th at 9400 rpm. This results in a top speed around 126/128 mph depending on the wind. It feels like the bike just doesn't have enough power since the topspeed in 4th gear is about as fast as 5th and 6th. Like it drags a lot in the wind and the engine cannot overcome it.

I don't have any side or top racks mounted and no fault codes in the bike. Further more the XR is fully stock and all the yearly service intervalls has been done by the BMW dealer. The XR is originally sold in Belgium (sometimes they sell the 100hp version) but after calling with 2 diffirent BMW dealers they verified with the frame number it actually is the 165hp version.

I have called and emailed to verious companies, from BMW dealers till tuners, but no one ever heared about this issue. They all said it should go easy hit 245/250 kmu. Also didn't find any information about this online.

This raises the stress something is wrong with my XR and only shows (until now) at top speed, but can possibly damage a lot when it's not solved.

Does anyone heared about this before? If yes, can you explain to me and maybe anyone else with this issue?

    Thankyou so much in advance.

    Cheers!

That’s not good.    I’m wondering if the previous owner had the ECU flashed and some sort of limiter in the higher gears was introduced.    Mine tops out at an indicated 156mph ( closed road ).

    Thankyou for the experience!
Do you happen to know how I can check if someone has changed the factory ecu file?

Take it to a reputable Tuner, they will be able to tell straight away after plugging it in.    The bike should rev freely in the the top gears and it appears something is restricting it.

Thankyou will do! It's probably busy now the season starts but if I will let the results know here.

If anyone in the main time has any suggestions I'm all eyes and ears  :002:

Might be a good idea to take it back where you bought it from first, and then ask a BMW dealer to take a look, if it's a tune, even BMW should be able to slap the stock ECU settings back on.

When I brought my Gen 1 from BMW UK it came with a key/chip that had to be installed in a connector under the seat to unlock full power or dynamic pro mode (can't remember the exact details!)  I thought that is daft as the first thing I did was install it!  I asked why BMW did this and I seem to remember there was some "homologation" required for Belgium?  Sorry I can't be more specific but might give you an idea where to look next...  Peter

Edit: Pretty sure this was covered in the Owners Manual

Hey Peter, yess that is the official 'dongle' from BMW. The whole S1000 series have a dongle that you can install under the seat to unlock the dynamic pro riding mode. But since my dynamic pro riding mode is unlocled and the dongle is installed the issue is not here. Thankyou anyway!  :001:
