    Incorrect Front Wheel/Tire Installation

So I normally do my own work, but because I was really pressed for time decided to have a dealership put a new set of tires on the bike for an upcoming trip. I get the bike back, hop on and head for home. Before I get out of the dealer parking lot noticed the ABS light still flashing and pulled over. I looked at the front wheel and saw the problem immediately, the wheel was install backwards with the ABS sensor ring on the opposite side of the fork mounted ABS sensor. WTF??? My bad for not checking everything before even hopping on the bike. Anyhoo, I went back and pointed out the discrepancy. They pulled the bike back in the shop, removed the wheel, installed the tire on the wheel in the correct direction and then installed the wheel on the bike correctly. On a minor note, I also noticed they didn't re-install the rear tire valve cap.

When it comes to maintenance on a motorcycle, one would think there would be a second set of eyes double checking things before saying it's ready for riding. Wondering what might be installed backwards, or even forgotten about, when they do more involved tasks/maintenance like valve clearance adjustments and such?

Mistakes happen -  BUT it takes no time for a second mechanic to come by and check the first mechanic's work on that kind of thing.

Not if there's only one mechanic in the shop....and yes, mistakes happen.

This is why I do "ALL" my own mechanical work and tyre changes at home...I trust nobody.. :006: But this isn't an option for people who don't have the skills or space/tools to do their own work...they have to rely on others unfortunately.

This is why I try to leave as little of the menial tasks to mechanics as I can. This is bad, but what's worse is when they put the wheel in without the spacer 1st time around, bent my ABS ring and then put it together again. At that point kaputt electronics, the sensor was also damaged so got them to replace it, all good ever since... But... 90% of the time even if they don't make egregious mistakes like this most mechanics will not do the little things that make a HUGE difference, like making sure the callipers are centered on the discs, bouncing the fork on the axle  before doing up the pinch bolts etc, little things like this can seriously affect how smooth the bike rides and get neglected by almost every mechanic, and especially tyres shops.

No doubt about it that mistakes do happen!

Yeah, normally I remove/install the wheels myself and take it to the shop to have the tires replaced. I used to wrestle with doing the tires on rubber mat on the garage floor with some large tire irons and cheap Harbor Freight bead breaker, but the family got tired of hearing me constantly cuss up a storm. I may need to invest in a rabaconda unit and go back to doing them myself.

The unfortunate thing with newer BMW bikes is that they don't release/sell shop maintenance manuals to the consumer anymore. Hopefully they reverse this decision in the near future or otherwise I may need to look at buying my next bike from a manufacturer that still sells manuals to the public.

And this is the reason I have one of these in my shed at home..

While I do have a 3-car garage, I just don't have room for a big changer like that -- tho I'd love to have one!!!

It's not really cost effective to have one of these unless you do a fair few tyre changes, it also does car and light truck tyres....I do quite a few for my local motorcycle riding firends, saves them grief and time of trying to book in at a dealer or tyre shop etc....I basically do a "ride-in" service for mates....Also have one of these handy for major servicing duties..
