Gen 2 Chain and Sprocket Replacement

My 2020 XR needs a chain replacement. This is my first bike with a chain since I rode dirt bikes as a kid. I'm assuming I'll need to replace the front and rear sprocket as well. In looking for parts online, the rear sprocket is available in steel or aluminum. Does it matter which type is installed? Positives & negatives? Is there any reason the Gen 2 XR sprockets are difficult to find?

Just look on Ebay, DID ZVMX + a pair of JT steel sprockets, front preferably rubber cushioned, can't go wrong, probably around 140 bucks all in all.

Agree with Antares. DID ZVMX has been a great chain for me. Aluminum and alloy sprockets do not last as long as steel. Many use these type of sprockets for the track.

You may want to consider changing the number of teeth on the rear sprocket: https://www.s1000rrforum.com/threads/gen-2-xr-525-42t-rear-sprocket-change.249608/

I'd debate that a bit, I've had an ally 42T rear sprocket on mine for well over 50k km...and it's still ok....will need replacement in the next 5k km I suspect. The original Regina chain lasted just 5k km before a couple of tight links forced me to replace it prematurely.

I do have a home made electronic oiler though, so I suspect that helps with longevity.

    Smithy.

I highly recommend OEM stuff. I just replaced mine 2 months ago. Bought it from these guys. Front & Rear Sprocket and Low maintenance OEM Regina Chain.

Shipped from Germany to the States in 4 days. Crazy fast shipping.

Looking at replacing my chain & sprockets soon. Does anyone know the chain size on a 2020 Gen 2.
I see many sellers giving the 525 pitch x 128 links for a Gen 1 but nothing regarding a Gen 2. Are they the same?
    Thank in advance

Check the link above, that's what I bought, I have 2020 XR. Yes 525 and 128 is what you need.

:0461: Ebay was about 100 dollars less expensive.

I would go with Regina OEM chain and sprockets as it's move "beefier", but everyone has their choice.
