    Coolant leakage / crack reservoir

    Hi there,

I'm new to this forum. I bought a 2016 BMW S1000XR a couple of months ago. Went from California to Washington state and back along the coast (which was a beautiful ride) and I had no issues.
Yesterday however, I made a short ride and when I came back the coolant was leaking. When I inspected the reservoir, I discovered a little crack.
    See the images attached.

This morning I went to the seller/dealer and they can help me in August ... and they have a Californian rate of $195 per hour :005:

I'm not very technical, but with a couple of YouTube videos I was able to remove the fair to check if there were other leakages around the reservoir and tank and it seems only the reservoir.

Can you give me an advise how to proceed? Can I order the reservoir and replace it myself? And if so, is it just removing the tubes, let the coolant out, replace the reservoir and connect all the tubes?
Do you know a place where to order this reservoir?

Many thanks for helping me out!  :158:

I think this should be pretty easy.  Here's a link to a parts fiche that lists the tank for $73 - https://www.ascycles.com/bmw/2015/S1000XR/cooling/Expansion%20tank.html#PartsTable

You could google the part number if you want look for a cheaper option, but $73 ain't bad.  It should be as easy as draining the coolant, swapping out the reservoirs and then refilling the system.  There are instructions on that in the maint manual.  If you don't have one let me know and I can post the relevant pages.  You will get a lot of opinions on coolant options, but a gallon of the blue OEM BMW concentrate stuff (mix with distilled water per the instructions) isn't expensive and will last you for life probably.

I ordered it there. I found the part somewhere else for $40, but the shipping costs were $40 as well  :084:

I'll check the manual and get the coolant at the dealer shop.

Well, I got my new reservoir delivered today  :152:

Do I need to drain the complete cooling system, or can I just empty the reservoir (and save the bit of coolant), replace the reservoir and fill it again with the saved coolant? Can I top it off with another brand of blue coolant? (I don't know which brand is in it now, only that it's blue)

    Thanks again for your help!

Unless you know for sure how old the current coolant is, I would drain the whole system and get the fresh stuff in there... and since it's fairly inexpensive, I probably wouldn't mix and match with older/other brand of coolant.
Just the way I would go about it... :038:
