    Gen2 (2020-) Alternator Cover

Its been a while, collision with a deer at 60mph, broke myself and the bike and just getting back to it…

My alternator cover is damaged and it looks like I will have to replace it, damned expensive new 😬

A few questions that I hope someone might help with:

    1) The S1000R (2020-) cover looks very similar, but not black. Relatively speaking its much cheaper on eBay. Does anyone know if its compatible?

    2) The cover itself seems a little tricky to remove, it seems like the magnets try to hold it on? Does anyone have any experience of replacing it? Any tips?

    Thanks in advance!

The coils part of the stator is bolted to the cover, so yes getting it off will be tricky due the magnetic attraction (the circular magnet is glued and bolted onto the end of the crankshaft) .  As will getting it back on - in that as soon as you offer it up to the engine it will snap on quite forcefully.

R & XR engines are essentially identical.

Thanks, I suspected this having unbolted it.

I assume BMW has some tool to help. I have a half-arsed idea to drill out / thread the damaged black centre plug and use that with a large bolt to help get it off and, more importantly, control the snap back on. But perhaps this is a little fantastic  :008:

Thanks Smithy. I am inclined to gamble the $60 on eBay vs the $330 for a new cover.
