Hide the number plate (licence plate)?

I am genuinely curious why this happened. I enquired about a used 2017 R1200RT that is for sale in the UK .It is being sold online on Autotrader. I sent the seller an email with my email address and mobile phone number and he answered the queries I had on service history etc. I had also asked for the registration number so that I could check the MOT (TUV/Annual Check) history but the seller declined saying it was for "security reasons". What am I missing here?

Not surprising to be honest, people hide their number on adverts or even general photos to stop them being cloned onto another bike.

Cloning of plates is a big problem here.

There's even an article on Autotrader:

Thanks Dan this is helpful.  But if one wanted to clone a bike would it not be easier just to spot one on the road? I was genuinely interested in this bike and the seller had my name , telephone number and email address but was unwilling to provide the number.Agh well I suppose that's the world we live in now 😊

Your average scumbag isn't going to go out cruising the streets looking for make/model to take down plate numbers. Just bring up any sales site online and take your pick. Hence why people obscure them in public photos.

I couldn't tell you the last time I saw an XR on the road, but I could find one for sale online in seconds.

It's reasonable for this guy to want to protect his asset, he knows a genuine buyer would put more legwork into the deal and make those checks when viewing the bike, a thief would already have moved on to the next target.

Like you say; it's an unfortunate side affect of the modern world.
