Has anyone used Motul 7100 5w-40 oil? oil is very red, is that suppose to be like that. I'm afraid of putting it in.

Just curious what other people use. Going from BMW Advantec to Motul?

Red is the correct colour for the 7100 Motul oil.

Big color change, just wasn't sure.

Typically you can't drain all the oil from the engine, so mixing BMW Advantec and Motul is scary a bit.

I remember when I was using 300V in my Kawasaki... now that's a weird colour...

Nothing wrong with mixing them though. I've been going back and forth between Motul 7100 and Shell Advance Ultra (basically the same stuff as BMW Advantec) depending on weather and never ran into issues. Oils are easy beasts, mixing simply makes their properties end up somewhere in the middle, eg if you mix a 10W30 with a 10W50, you'd end up with 10W40, same goes for it's other properties too, for the most part.

Thanks guys, just needed some validation since I never used Motul, but will start using it as it's getting easier to get it here in US.

BMW Advantec is just "rebranded" Shell Advance oil.....Percentage wise the volume difference is huge...it shouldn't discolour the new oil too much....I warm mine up and let it drain over night if possible, may help get those last drops out. There's always quite a bit of oil in the cyl head & gearbox nooks & crannys which you'll never get out.

I know bugger all about oil, so for that reason I play safe and just use the BMW stuff, but it really pisses me off to pay over the odds just to have the BMW branding.

    But.

I can see from https://www.shell.com/motorist/oils-lubricants/advance-for-motorcycles.html that Shell is indeed the supplier of BMW Advantec, but given that the BMW stuff is 5W40, and Shell Advance Ultra is 15W50, how can you claim that they are the same stuff??   There are are range of different Shell  Advance oils, none of which who's viscosity matches BMWs.

And people wonder why I have trust issues...

Still isn't 5W40 like BMW Advantec though, so it's clearly different stuff - which was the point I was making
