    Fork oil change

    Hi all

quick question , since my bike is in for a service.

How often do you all change the fork oil?¿

Looking at the servicing it was last changed at 28000kms and the bike now has 49000kms. Thinking it might be worth doing.

Also, do you guys stick with the original fork oil or put in something heavier?

    thanks

Use standard BMW type 2 oil (about 10.5W or smth like that)

Damping majority is done in the left fork leg in an enclosed electronic cartridge.

The oil doesn't do a lot of work in the forks so it tends to last long, i did mine at like 25k mile (38k km) and it looked pretty clean and healthy

Thanks for the info. So realistically I could leave it another 10k before changing.

I´ve been watching a lot of Dave Moss videos lately and he always recommends super short intervals so it´s quite strange to hear 30k intervals on our bikes.

My gen 1 XR 2018 has done 34k without a fork oil change. I will get it done at 36k purely precautionary as what work does the oil really do ..not a lot as the cartridge takes most of the dampening.
I have had many discussions with motorcycle techs and I get the same answer.

That's on full manual suspensions and I'd maybe agree, but as i said in this bike the left leg is the one that controls the majority of damping in the electronic unit and that unit has it's own oil inside and is unserviceable

Changed my fork oil at my 30k km service and it still looked near new, not much in the way of discolouring etc...I put Motul 10w oil back in and couldn't tell the difference, it rode exactly the same.

    Smithy.

    Following on from this question.

I checked my rebound both in road and dynamic mode yesterday. Bike was turned on, stationary with fron brakes pulled.

Seems very bouncy even in dynamic.

Since these are "semi active" is the stationary rebound not something to worry about?

Pretty much... Not sure if the damping is even "on" when the bike is just on, think engine needs to be running too. Or otherwise it just thinks you hit a huge bump and it's softening the blow. When riding I never thought the XR was bouncy, not like an ADV is, though the Gen 1 the difference between Road and Dynamic damping is fairly small for general riding, most felt under acceleration and braking, lot more support in dynamic, less fishtailing when braking hard.

    Ok that´s good to know.

On a side note, is it normal for the front end to lift when accelarating hard, like the forks extend at the front?

Haven´t ridden an upright for a while and am not used to that feeling.
